PVC-Recycling: Rekordprojekt in Franken

Ende Oktober 2017 fiel der Startschuss für ein in mancherlei Hinsicht rekordverdächtiges Bauprojekt. In Schweinfurt wird derzeit eine ehemalige Siedlung der US-Streitkräfte, die sich heute im Besitz der Stadt befindet, abgerissen und durch ein Neubaugebiet ersetzt. Bis 2019 werden die Arbeiten auf dem 28 Hektar großen Areal mit 34 dreigeschossigen Wohnzeilen und 13 Doppelhäusern voraussichtlich andauern. Der Rückbau erfolgt nach modernen und umweltgerechten Standards, was nicht nur eine Trennung der unterschiedlichen Baustoffe beinhaltet, sondern auch deren Recycling.

Neben einer größeren Menge an ausgedienten PVC-Bodenbelägen werden beim Abbruch der Siedlung auch rund 2.500 Kunststoff-Altfenster ausgebaut, in Containern gesammelt, anschließend werkstofflich recycelt und zu Fenster- und Bauprofilen wiederverwertet.  Das Projekt in Schweinfurt gehört zu den bundesweit vier größten Recyclingprojekten für PVC-Altfenster der letzten zehn Jahre – und im Freistaat Bayern stellt das Projekt sogar einen Recyclingrekord auf. Begleitet wird das Projekt von der Arbeitsgemeinschaft PVC und Umwelt e.V. (AGPU), von Rewindo Fenster-Recycling-Service GmbH, von der Arbeitsgemeinschaft PVC-Bodenbelag Recycling (AgPR), vom europäischen Wirtschaftsverband für Hersteller von PVC-Fensterprofilsystemen und verwandten Bauprodukten (EPPA ivzw) sowie vom Recycling-Unternehmen Dekura GmbH.

Im Rahmen eines Pressetermins stellten AgPR, AGPU, Rewindo und Dekura zusammen mit dem Rückbauunternehmen am 25. Oktober die PVC-Recyclingaktivitäten vor Ort vor. Neben Vertretern der lokalen Medien berichtete auch der Bayrische Rundfunk dabei.

The Second Recycling Meeting Was a Complete Success

At the beginning of September 2017, the second regional meeting of the „PVC Recyclers Meet PVC Processors“ series of events held by AGPU and VinylPlus took place in Minden/Porta Westfalica. The meeting attracted a very impressive total of more than 30 participants, who made the most of the opportunity to briefly present their products, services and requirements. They were then able to discuss these in detail in personal discussions. This second meeting was hosted by Tönsmeier Kunststoffe. After the event, the plastics recycling company also invited participants on a tour of its modern plastics sorting plant.

The third and final meeting this year will take place at the company Rehau in Erlangen on 23rd November. A number of participants have also already signed up to attend this networking event. PVC Recycling in FOCUS Magazine

The next issue of FOCUS magazine (publication date: 30th September 2017) will contain a special supplement covering the topics of recycling and resources. AGPU was able to publish two articles in this high-quality publication, which will also feature an article by Plastics Europe and plastics recycling companies. The guest article by the AGPU Managing Director Thomas Hülsmann promotes the recycling of PVC building products in Germany and the successes achieved by the industry with regard to the topics of sustainability, resource efficiency and energy efficiency. A further guest article presents VinylPlus, the sustainability programme of the European PVC industry, and its objective of further increasing the registered quantities of recycled PVC by 2020.

Both articles will not only appear in the printed special supplement but also on the FOCUS website. A PDF version of the special supplement will additionally be available after the magazine has been published.

Best Practice for the Environment: New Project

Energy-efficient renovation work is currently being carried out on a residential building containing 24 flats in Mühlhausen (Germany). The special feature of this work is the fact that after being removed and replaced with new energy-saving PVC windows, the old PVC products, namely 89 windows and 24 balcony elements, will be recycled and reused later. By taking this approach, the renovation project is participating in the „Best Practice for the Environment“ campaign, which is identifying and documenting exemplary and sustainable building projects in the German federal states of Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt until the end of the year.

The environmental campaign, which is supported by a number of regional and national associations and companies, was initiated by AGPU, Rewindo and AgPR.

Strengthen PVC Recycling Activities

In consideration of current developments such as the German Packaging Law and the European Circular Economy Package, it is clear that PVC recycling is becoming increasingly important both in Germany and on a European level. It is therefore essential that we work together to make an effort in many different areas where this matter is concerned, especially in order to achieve the quantity-related targets set by VinylPlus, the sustainability programme of the European PVC industry.

With its three upcoming meetings in Troisdorf, Porta Westfalica and Erlangen, our successful series of „PVC Recyclers Meet PVC Processors“ events is a good starting point for these joint efforts. These events not only offer you the opportunity to present yourself, your company, products and requirements, but also to find out more about the current status of PVC recycling and to exchange information, ideas and experiences in personal conversations.

PVC Recyclers Meet PVC Processors: Event Dates

After the two kick-off events held at the Demolition Conference in Berlin and the terratec trade fair in Leipzig, the dates for the three regional meetings of the successful series of „PVC Recyclers Meet PVC Processors“ events held by AGPU, VinylPlus, AgPR, Rewindo and Roofcollect have now been confirmed. One of the main targets of the joint project is to further increase the amount of PVC recycling material and to improve networking activities between PVC processors and recycling companies. Participants are therefore able to present their products, services and requirements in person at the meetings. This is a great start for further discussions.

The first regional event will take place at the premises of the flooring manufacturer Gerflor Mipolam in Troisdorf on the 13th of June. Other meetings will be held at recovery company Tönsmeier Kunststoffe in Minden/Porta Westfalica on the 6th of September and at Rehau in Erlangen on the 23rd of November. Recycling Solutions: Campaign PVC Recycling

At the beginning of March, the Campaign “Aktion-PVC-Recycling” participated in the 23rd Demolition Conference with a joint stand. More than 900 demolition and recycling specialists from all over Europe made the most of the event in Berlin as an opportunity to discuss current topics in the industry. At the campaign stand, for example, participants in the Demolition Conference were invited to find out more about recycling solutions for flooring, roofing membranes, windows, doors, roller shutters, tarpaulins and pipes made of PVC throughout Germany.

Demolition activities also involve non-mineral building materials, which often include windows, floor coverings, roofing membranes and pipes made of PVC. „We offer our services as a partner of the demolition industry in this special field and in order to demonstrate this, we have been regularly participating in the conference held by the German Demolition Association (DA) for the past 15 years“, explains Michael Vetter, the Managing Director of Rewindo and recycling expert of AGPU.

Alongside AGPU, the German Association for the Recycling of PVC Floor Coverings (AgPR), Roofcollect, the German Plastic Pipe Association (KRV), EPCOAT and Rewindo are all partners of the campaign “Aktion-PVC-Recycling”.

Recyclinglösungen: Aktion PVC-Recycling

An der 23. Fachtagung Abbruch hat sich Anfang März auch die Aktion PVC-Recycling wieder mit einem Gemeinschaftsstand beteiligt. Mehr als 900 Abbruch- und Recycling-Spezialisten aus ganz Europa haben die Veranstaltung in Berlin genutzt, um sich dort über die aktuellen Themen der Branche auszutauschen. So konnten sich die Teilnehmer der Abbruchtagung am Stand der Aktion PVC-Recycling über bundesweite Recyclinglösungen für Bodenbeläge, Dachbahnen, Fenster, Türen, Rollladen, Planen und Rohre aus PVC informieren.

Bei Abbruchmaßnahmen fallen auch nicht-mineralische Baustoffe an, nicht selten Fenster, Bodenbeläge, Dachbahnen oder Rohre aus PVC. „Wir bieten uns in diesem speziellen Bereich als Partner der Abbruchbranche an. Um dies zu demonstrieren, nehmen wir seit 15 Jahren regelmäßig an der Fachtagung des Deutschen Abbruchverbandes teil“, so Michael Vetter, Geschäftsführer der Rewindo GmbH; Mitinitiator der Aktion PVC-Recycling und Recycling-Experte der AGPU.

Neben der AGPU sind auch die Arbeitsgemeinschaft PVC-Bodenbelag Recycling (AgPR), Roofcollect, der Kunststoffrohr-Verband (KRV), EPCOAT und Rewindo Partner von Aktion PVC-Recycling.

The AGPU PVC Recycling Finder received another update

After the last major update of the PVC Recycling Finder at the beginning of last year, the website was yet again updated at the end of 2016. Alongside small adjustments such as changing the details of contacts, the update also involved the addition of further recycling companies to the AGPU directory. As a result, a total of 66 PVC recyclers are now listed on the website together with their products and services.

Ever since the PVC Recycling Finder was first created, the website has become increasingly popular, not only in terms of its number of visitor, but also with regard to the number of enquiries that are regularly answered by the recycling expert at the AGPU office.

AgPR Gets Involved in the „Best Practice“ Campaign

The „Best Practice for the Environment“ campaign, which was launched this summer, has welcomed a new member to its group of initiators. Alongside AGPU and Rewindo, the German Association for the Recycling of PVC Floor Coverings (AgPR) is now one of the organisers behind the campaign. The aim of the „Best Practice“ campaign is to identify exemplary building projects in the German federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia that involve the recycling and re-use of used PVC construction products such as windows or floor coverings. The initiative is aimed at housing, window construction and demolition companies, as well as constructors of public buildings, and will run until autumn 2017. The „Best Practice“ projects will then be compiled in a project documentation.

„Alongside scrap windows, tarpaulins and pipes made of PVC, vinyl flooring also plays an important role in the material recycling of construction products“, explains the AgPR Managing Director, Dr Jochen Zimmermann. The AgPR runs a central recycling facility for used PVC flooring in Troisdorf. In 2015 alone, the facility recycled over 2500 tons of waste material, a large amount of which was then re-used.
