Corona Crisis: Vinyl products in the healthcare sector

The AGPU published a detailed report on the benefits of vinyl products in the healthcare sector on its website. They have been used successfully for over 60 years and are indispensable. This is also evident in view of the current COVID-19 pandemic and is demonstrated by the wide range of medical applications, such as pharmaceutical blister packs for medicines, infusion tubes, blood bags, respiratory masks, single-use protective gloves or components of medical devices.

The range of high-performance PVC products in the healthcare sector is wide and is constantly being expanded with new applications. About 40 percent of all medical plastic products in European hospitals are made of PVC. They improve the chances of recovery, extend life expectancy and enable the best standards of hygiene. PVC owes its widespread use in the healthcare sector not only to its individually adaptable material properties, but also to its attractive designs and low purchase and maintenance costs in times of tight budgets.

EU: Medical Device Regulation postponed

In view of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the EU Parliament has postponed the start of the EU Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) until 26 May 2021. This means that medical devices can still be marketed for another year under the previous regulations.

The Medical Devices Regulation was supposed to come into force on 26 May of this year. Among other things, it lays down uniform criteria for testing bodies, the so-called Notified Bodies, for the approval of medical devices and regulates the procedure for the approval of clinical trials of medical devices.

Already in March, the EU Commission had advocated postponing the start of the regulation in order to avoid supply bottlenecks with medical devices during the corona crisis.

VinylPlus Sustainability Forum 2020 postponed

In mid-March, VinylPlus® Managing Director Brigitte Dero announced that the VinylPlus Sustainability Forum will be postponed to 14-15 October 2020 due to the current pandemic situation. The city and venue will remain the same. Participants who have already paid the registration fee and are unable to attend in October will receive a refund.

Material flow analysis for plastics: data collection started

The data collection for the current „Material flow analysis for plastics in Germany 2019“ has started. In the coming months, more than 2,000 companies from the plastics production, processing and recycling industries will be surveyed and available statistics and studies evaluated. The plastics material flow analysis enjoys a high reputation among politicians, authorities and experts and shows that circular economy has long been a central topic for the German plastics industry and that the protection of the environment is an important concern for the entire industry.

In addition to AGPU and PlasticEurope Germany, clients include the BKV, bvse, BDE, GKV, pro-K, KRV and VCI. Within the scope of the data collection there will also be current data for the material PVC. A detailed PVC study is not planned until 2021.

Keep distance: Vinyl floor mats for office and retail

dpa: Successful comeback of vinyl flooring

Two weeks ago, the German news agency (dpa) published a report in which Luxury Vinyl Tiles were said to have made a successful comeback. This report has already been published in numerous media nationwide, and other newspapers will probably pick up the extremely positive news about vinyl flooring for their coverage.

As experts, the professional association of the manufacturers of elastic floor coverings (FEB) and Objectflor, a well-known manufacturer of floor coverings, were interviewed.

VinylPlus Sustainability Forum 2020: #CIRCULARVINYL

The 2020 edition of the VinylPlus Sustainability Forum themed #CIRCULARVINYL will focus on the key sustainability challenges and transformation for the vinyl industry in the years to come, both in the European and global contexts. The event will gather representatives from the EU institutions, the United Nations, NGOs, politicians, academia and the entire PVC industry value chain, in Florence, Italy, on May 6th and 7th 2020.

Organised by VinylPlus®, the Voluntary Commitment to sustainable development of the European PVC industry, the 2020 Forum will explore how to turn PVC sustainability progress into business opportunities for the entire PVC industry towards 2030 and beyond. It will also examine PVC’s role in sustainable construction for redesigning tomorrow’s urban environment with ‘green’ certified products.

Circular Plastics Alliance grows to 170+ members

The Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA), which was officially founded in September 2019, enjoys strong support. According to the EU Commission, more than 170 members have joined the alliance for the plastics recycling industry so far. The supporters include companies, associations and organisations from both the public and private sectors and the entire value chain of plastics.

All six working groups of the Alliance have already started their work. They cover the automotive, packaging, construction, agriculture, electrical and electronic equipment, and monitoring and data collection sectors.

Titanium dioxide: Classification published in the EU Official Journal again

The classification of titanium dioxide under the 14th ATP of the CLP regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 18 February 2020. Due to different information on the date of entry into force in the different language versions of the regulation (the German version referred to 9 September 2021), the classification was published again in the Official Journal on 25 February 2020.

The correct date is 01 October 2021. Until then there is a transitional period, which the supply chain must use for implementation. Again, please note that titanium dioxide is only classified in powder form.
