AGPU Sets Course for Its Future Orientation

AGPU becomes a member of VinylPlus, the sustainability programme of the European PVC industry. Stefan Valerius, the Managing Director of Dekura GmbH, is elected as a member of the AGPU Managing Board.

AGPU has now been committed to PVC in Germany for nearly 30 years. The transition to the development and production of sustainable products offers the entire industry a wide range of opportunities and both the PVC industry and AGPU are well prepared when it comes to dealing with this transition. Modern PVC products are not only reliable in terms of their application, but also offer innovative properties and remain sustainable throughout their service lives and right through to the recycling process.

At the AGPU General Meeting held at the Collegium Leoninum hotel in Bonn, member companies set the course for the next steps to be taken. „AGPU is becoming a national partner of VinylPlus, the sustainability partner of the European PVC industry“, explains Dr Axel Bruder, the Chairman of the AGPU Managing Board and a member of the Managing Board of RENOLIT SE in Worms. According to Bruder, the group will now continue the successful journey on which it embarked many years ago, which includes working in closer cooperation with VinylPlus and other associations in the European PVC network. Bruder states that this helps to strengthen both the continued work and competence of AGPU in Germany and the targets pursued by VinylPlus on a European level. He also explains that the cooperation of both associations helps to bring about important synergy effects in the industry.

Another focus of the agenda of the AGPU General Meeting was the election of Stefan Valerius, the Managing Director of Dekura GmbH as a member of the AGPU Managing Board. The company based in Höxter is one of the market leaders in the field of PVC and scrap window recycling in Europe. „The election of Mr Valerius means that the entire PVC value chain is yet again represented in the AGPU Managing Board“, states Thomas Hülsmann, the AGPU Managing Director.

The General Meeting was followed by the round-table event for decision-makers from the PVC industry. Alongside Dr Rüdiger Baunemann, the Director General of PlasticsEurope Deutschland e.V. and a member of the AGPU Managing Board, the event organisers were also able to gain Dirk Jespen, the Executive Director of Ökopol – Institut für Ökologie und Politik GmbH, as a speaker for the event. In his presentation, Mr Jespen told participants about a current project that identifies the challenges involved in PVC recycling under REACH and waste legislation and proposes corresponding problem-solving approaches. Dr Baunemann provided participants at the round-table event with an insight into the roadmap of the European Commission and the contribution made by the plastics industry with regards to the European „Circular Economy Package“.

Best Practice for the Environment: New Project

Energy-efficient renovation work is currently being carried out on a residential building containing 24 flats in Mühlhausen (Germany). The special feature of this work is the fact that after being removed and replaced with new energy-saving PVC windows, the old PVC products, namely 89 windows and 24 balcony elements, will be recycled and reused later. By taking this approach, the renovation project is participating in the „Best Practice for the Environment“ campaign, which is identifying and documenting exemplary and sustainable building projects in the German federal states of Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt until the end of the year.

The environmental campaign, which is supported by a number of regional and national associations and companies, was initiated by AGPU, Rewindo and AgPR.

Soft PVC Campaign: Advertorial in „Outdoor-Magazin“

An advertorial for the Soft PVC Communication Campaign has been published in the July issue of „Outdoor-Magazin“. The article was produced by AGPU Media and promotes the benefits of PVC-coated fabrics, from lightweight tents for camping right through to innovative circus roofs.

After receiving positive feedback on advertorials for PVC products in green public procurement that have already been published on multiple occasions as part of a joint communication project with VinylPlus, the steering committee has now decided to publish several advertorials on selected topics to accompany its well-established advertising motifs.

If you would like to find out more about the other measures and projects involved in the campaign or contribute to the campaign yourself in order to ensure that soft PVC products continue to be the number one choice among decision-makers both now and in the future, please feel free to contact us. AGPU Managing Director, Thomas Hülsmann, will be happy to provide you with all the details.

Window Imports Are Strongly Increasing

According to data recorded by the German Association of Windows and Facades (Verband Fenster + Fassade – VFF), the number of windows produced in Germany in 2016 reached a total of 11,944 million window units. A good half of this overall production quantity, namely 6.454 million window units, were PVC windows, which can be compared with figures of 6.492 million window units in 2015 and 6.707 million window units in 2014.

While window exports slightly decreased in 2016 (from 9.3% in 2014 to 9.0% in 2016), window imports increased, with a total of 2.94 million window units imported to Germany last year. This total can be compared with figures of 2.618 million window units in 2015 and 2.379 million window units in 2014. Around 1.76 million window units, which equates to 60% of all imported windows in 2016, came from Poland. 75.2% of these window units were for plastic windows.
At the beginning of May, the VFF presented its current window sales figures for the previous year, which revealed that a total of eight million window units were sold in Germany in 2016.

Joint PVC Workshop in Frankfurt

The joint PVC Workshop by AGPU and PlasticsEurope Germany in Frankfurt last week was yet again a complete success. A total of around 60 experts were participating, all presentations were on highly topical issues which were concluded by lifely discussions. The networking dinner in the evening before was very well accepted.

The next PVC Workshop will be held at the Collegium Leonium in Bonn on Tuesday 16th January 2018. Please make a note of this date in your diary! Do you have any special topic requests or speaker recommendations for next year’s event? If so, please contact Ms Pohl (iris.pohl@agpu.com), who looks forward to hearing from you.

Strengthen PVC Recycling Activities

In consideration of current developments such as the German Packaging Law and the European Circular Economy Package, it is clear that PVC recycling is becoming increasingly important both in Germany and on a European level. It is therefore essential that we work together to make an effort in many different areas where this matter is concerned, especially in order to achieve the quantity-related targets set by VinylPlus, the sustainability programme of the European PVC industry.

With its three upcoming meetings in Troisdorf, Porta Westfalica and Erlangen, our successful series of „PVC Recyclers Meet PVC Processors“ events is a good starting point for these joint efforts. These events not only offer you the opportunity to present yourself, your company, products and requirements, but also to find out more about the current status of PVC recycling and to exchange information, ideas and experiences in personal conversations.

Participation in the events is free of charge. We look forward to seeing you there and enjoying interesting discussions full of new ideas and incentives. If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Julia Gogos.

PVC Window Sales in Germany increase

In 2016, window sales in Germany increased by 3.3 percent to a total of around 13.8 million window units. This is the result of a continuously updated study conducted by the market research institute Heinze, which was produced in cooperation with the four German industry associations VFF, Pro-K, FV S+B and BF and was recently presented. According to the study, growth was recorded in the case of all frame materials last year.

Sales of plastic windows reached a total of 8.0 million window units, which represents a market share of 57.7 percent. Wooden windows achieved a market share of 15.1 percent thanks to total sales of 2.1 million window units, while wood and metal constructions achieved 1.2 million window units and therefore 9.0 percent of the overall market. Sales of metal windows increased to 2.5 million window units, which represents a market share of 18.2 percent. Around 65.8 percent of the window units sold were used in residential buildings, while 34.2 percent were installed in non-residential buildings. In the current year 2017, the industry associations expect to see yet another increase in sales volume of 3.9 percent, resulting in a total of 14.4 million window units.

New Advertisement in the Wings In-Flight Magazine

The current May/June issue of the in-flight magazine „Wings“ features an advertisement with the slogan „PVC is cool“ by the Soft PVC Communication Campaign run by AGPU Media on page 14. According to media data, the in-flight magazine reaches a readership of around three million passengers with a high share of business travellers of nearly 42 percent. The magazine, which boasts a high-quality design, can be found on every seat on board all Germanwings and Eurowings aircraft.

The publication of the advertisement represents just one of the many activities carried out as part of the Soft PVC Communication Campaign. We are happy to inform you about the other measures used in the campaign in order to ensure that soft PVC products continue to be the number one choice among decision-makers both now and in the future. For more information, please feel free to contact the AGPU Managing Director Thomas Hülsmann, who looks forward to hearing from you.
